Planning for 2016 Success
Terry: Be your own consultant – you already know what needs to be done!
Aaron: Break out your business plan / marketing plan and make sure to update it.
Terry: Take a hard look at your customer list – time to fire anyone?
Also, pick out your key customers and make sure to nurture and find more like them.
Aaron: Use numbers / expense to drive your goals.
Terry: Brainstorm group (Managers… Supervisors… Small group of employees)
Assign each person a subject area to lead the group with.
How can we make our product better?
What new markets should we explore? Define your product and capability, then brainstorm what new markets match what you do best.
What can we do to make this a better work environment?
Aaron: Don’t be afraid to do more of what was successful. Don’t have to make changes.
Terry: Track your week in 15-minute blocks to see where you spend your time. When I did this once running a large production shop, I discovered I spent 60% of my time on scheduling issues. I hired a scheduling person to free up myself.
Chat Log:
ErichCampbell: Good morning, guys!
2 Regular Guys: Morning!!!
ErichCampbell: I always put it this way- it’s so easy to look at someone else’s business and make suggestions; you need to step outside of your own business and look at it like a visitor; to look like it as if it were someone else’s business and evaluate your own efforts.
ErichCampbell: That evaluation is so important. So many of us are creative folks who get lost in process and design and forget to evaluate.
ErichCampbell: I’m always telling those people who love to decorate, that you have to learn to love business if you want to run one, or hire/partner with someone who does. 🙂
2 Regular Guys: Great point!! You got some good ones at Black Duck.
ErichCampbell: We do, but boy we could always do better. It’s why I cringe every time someone calls a master or a veteran. (Also because I’m not that darn old, darn it. I’m almost a millennial! Missed it by 3 years, I swear! 😉 )
ErichCampbell: There’s no person that can’t learn something new, and new folks teach us old folks quite often.
ErichCampbell: Thank you for the great show, guys! I’m going to really think about the time management, especially.
ErichCampbell: Great first show. 🙂
2 Regular Guys: Thanks!
