Dad Joke

Aaron: I’ve heard there’s a new miracle pill to cure procrastination

I’d probably try it tomorrow

Training for Success

Aaron: Terry, we talk about you being a sales guy, and a seminar guy, but not everyone knows in reality you spent years as a production floor manager. That’s where you came up with your concept for 52/15 Training. Let’s start with an explanation of what that means.

The 52/15 Concept

  • I’m going to shift 180 degrees and start with what it isn’t.
  • In most garment decorating shops what does training consist of?
    • Watch what he does
    • Help her load shirts and observe
    • Watch these YouTube videos
    • There needs to be some level of onboarding training on your overall operation, your company culture, expectations, etc., before you dig into specifics.
    • 52/15 is the ongoing training for all you employees
  • Setting aside 15 minutes every week for training and education
  • Bite size slices of information about what you do every day, that are easy to share and easy to consume
  • People want to work for a company, and employer, who shares and teaches and helps them to be better at what they do.

Aaron: It feels like a no brainer. Why do so few people do something like this?

  • The first one is always, I don’t have the time. We’re too busy. We’re already behind as it is! That’s why I hired you!
  • I want to dig down on the real reasons in a minute

Aaron: Is this where Crisis Management vs Training Based Business comes into play?

  • A lot of uphill struggle in a business comes not from too much business but from lack of training or expertise of your staff
  • Most of the garment decorating shops I’ve been in struggled with just getting product from point A to point B
  • Problem solving is just opening your eyes and opening your mind

Aaron: What are some those real reasons so few people do this type of training?

  • I don’t want to give up my secrets.
  • Translation: I don’t have confidence in myself or my business so I’m afraid my employees will know I’m faking it and start their own business.
  • My employees don’t care and don’t want to learn. They just want a paycheck.
  • I don’t think I could come up with 52 things to share over a whole year
  • Most commonly, if employers are honest, the answer is “I don’t know where to start.”
The FUNdamentals of Business Success Book

Aaron: So, where do you start?

  • Training is always early in the week, Monday or Tuesday, and never ever on Friday
  • This training is for everyone. Having an understanding of what your company does, even if that component isn’t a part of your job will make the company as a whole better – Atlas story
  • Begin with a list of the steps in your process… and then break it down… and then break it down some more
  • Note on the list which things you personally feel proficient in sharing, then anyone else in house who might be proficient with items on your list. That’s a great starting point. Once you start, the ideas flow.
  • This is an education plan that focuses on a singular subject, a singular component in the larger process
  • Print out a one page worksheet that your employees need to fill in the blanks
  • Provide a ring bound notebook with tabs for the different areas you’ll be covering
  • After a year or so, you can repeat, add to, update, and present new subjects and information
  • This will also help catch up new employees

Aaron: What are some resources for this training content?

  • As the owner or manager, the first resource is you. What have you learned that you can share?
  • Online videos that you feel are the correct information from a reliable source
  • Your vendors would be happy to come in to do separate presentations on each of their products… and will probably bring donuts
  • Trade show seminars. None of us mind if you’re taking notes. In fact, we love to see you taking notes!
  • Anyone doing a trade show seminar is already freely sharing their knowledge. Share it forward!
  • Secret Sauce!! We’re building this information for you every week!

Aaron: I know you’ve been waiting for this part. Give us some examples of training subjects

  • When I talk about this in seminars, my example is an entire 10-15 minute presentation on squeegees
  • In screen printing I’ve have my emulsion vendor come in and talk about all the different types of emulsion and then we discuss why we chose the one we use in my shop
  • If I were doing DTG printing I might do a section the options of pretreat solutions – what’s the difference? I’d do another pretreat session on care and handling of pretreated garments, and so on
  • I could do two or three training sessions just on heat presses!
